Skirting the skimpy bra tops, cut outs, lime green and other unwearable (for most women) runway looks, here are the most flattering and easy-to-wear fashion trends for spring — from sherbet hues and jaunty stripes to trench coats with a twist and ’70s glam.
Think Pink
A parade of all hot pink looks came down the Valentino runway last month and it’s the big trend. Bubblegum and fuchsia to bright magenta, you’ll find hot pinks everywhere at every price point this spring — summer dresses, suits, skirts, tops, trousers, and trainers to bags, bras, scarves and shoes.
Preppy Stripes
Stripes were at the forefront for designers from Armani and Chloe to the king of stripes, Paul Smith. A top is a great way to get this look, wide-legged trousers mine two trends in one, and curvier figures are most flattered by stripes on the diagonal in an asymmetrical cut like this Mango skirt.
Tequila Sunrise: Bright Orange & Butter Yellow
Toss an outsized tangerine cotton-poplin shirt over white capris or layer a slim top over wide-legged trousers. Add some sunshine to your day look with a yellow blazer or handbag.
Feathers & Fringe
Feathery looks popped up on runways from Gucci to Cynthia Rowley and fringe was equally ubiquitous. A feather-accented blouse or jacket is an always-glam evening look. Fringe goes night or day with jackets, purses, sandals, and wraps.
Modern Trench
The classic trench got a contemporary twist with unexpected cuts, but a trend on the runway means a bonanza of choice in stores, ultra-high-end to super-affordable. If you wanted to invest in a designer classic, or simply add in a fresh and fluid new look, ’tis the season.
Goddess
Rodarte, Schiaparelli, Rick Owens, Balmain and more, designers were all over drapey fabrics and Grecian-style goddess dresses. Elegant evening wear, if you have a big event this summer, this is a flattering and affordable take on the trend, or go full golden goddess in this wow little number. Or you could just do the sandal.
Statement Suits
Tailored suits came in bright colours, timeless tone-on-tone neutrals and relaxed off-body cuts . Or design your own at Sumissura.
Motorcycle Diaries
The biker jacket is back. Miu Miu, Balenciaga, Prada, and McQueen bringing a ’90s vibe to the runway with various takes on the moto. Toronto’s Himel Brothers was the only Canadian brand to make GQs 2022 list of “Best Biker Jackets,” alongside top labels like Tom Ford and Rick Owens. Their Lady Kensington is gorgeous and they also do custom pieces.
Go Green
This crisp colour is on trend for spring. Stock up on leafy looks with high-rise jeans, a classic silk blouse, hippie summer dresses, or versatile linen shirtdress that’s great on its own or over pants.
In Bloom
Jason Wu’s painterly florals, big, bold blooms at Versace, Anna Sui’s signature ’70s take, flowers were blooming all over the catwalk. Maxi to mini, haute to hot, ladylike chiffon; designers were feeling the flora for spring and summer.
