For most men, the grooming process is a simplistic one (shower, shave, comb, and cologne). But, you can bet your last razor blade that men like George Clooney and Pierce Brosnan are paying more attention to the way they scrub up before heading out to conquer the world, and the products they use to do so.

Many established beauty brands are now catering to the male persuasion, but often this involves little more than re-packaging existing products in urbane colours and omitting flowery scents.

What’s an average bloke to do then? Perhaps make the acquaintance of Triumph and Disaster, the New Zealand-based men’s brand that has arrived in Canada with the hopes of persuading you, ol’ boy, to join the league of extraordinarily groomed gentlemen.

The line is founded by former international cricket star, Dion Nash, and includes products like Shearers Soap (a translucent, glycerin bar with poppy seeds suspended throughout for gentle exfoliation), Gameface Moisturiser (vitamin E and Jojobo extract are familiar ingredients; Horopito oil and Ponga fern a bit more exotic), and Old Fashioned Shave Cream (because no real man can do without a decent shaving cream–this is fact).

“Triumph & Disaster’s philosophy is to use the best of science combined with the best of nature to produce naturally derived but scientifically engineered products that work,” their website proclaims.

“We use local indigenous ingredients such as Horopito oil and Ponga fern extract blended with scientifically proven and natural ingredients from around the globe, such as clay from Australia, Jojoba extract from Mexico and Tamanu oil from Polynesia.”

The standout product is the Rock & Roll Suicide Volcanic Ash & Green Clay Face Scrub. The name is a blatant attempt to get men to enjoy the benefits of a facial scrub without having to sneak into their lady friend’s stash. Dear XY types, please believe the hype–once you experience the smooth skin left behind from a quick scrub, you will never be able to resist it’s beaconing call (regardless of packaging or name!).

The products range from $13 – $55, and are available across Canada in major cities.
